One of the most recognized drinks in the south, The Kentucky Derby Mint Julep. It's the perfect tradition to go along with horses, big hats, and the the most exciting 2 minutes in sports. Here is a vintage recipe for the iconic cocktail:
Kentucky Derby Mint Julep
1 glass of Bourbon
4 springs fresh mint
1/2 tbsp. powdered sugar
In a julep cup, crush the mint leaves and sugar lightly together, add bourbon and fill glass with cracked ice; stir gently until cup is frosted. Decorate on top with 3 springs of mint [source: How to Mix Drinks by Bill Edwards, published 1936]
For my brides out there, don't forget to register at Dolfinger's or The Dover House for sterling sliver julep cups. They are the perfect addition to your barware collection, a must have for Derby day celebrations, and yet beautifully classic to have on display all year round.
Cheers and happy Derby day!
